Recently we have known the death by sudden death of Davina Tavener of 47 years during a flight of the Ryanair company bound for Lanzarote.
This situation is not new, every year passengers in airplanes, airports, stations die ... etc. It is also not new that defibrillators save lives in a high percentage if they act in less than 5 minutes. Sudden death is not inevitable, being the first cause of death with more than 30.000 deaths in Spain each year outside of hospitals studies indicate that acting with a defibrillator in less than 5 minutes can achieve up to an 70% chance of survival .
And with these figures many will wonder ... How is it possible that a plane does not have a defibrillator?
The answer is simple and although it costs us, it is purely economic.
Most of the companies do not have defibrillators in the Airplanes although it is certain that some at the time bought the equipment and did not dispose them in the airplanes, the reason is purely economic. Let's suppose an airplane that makes a flight Madrid to Cancun and half the flight to 4 hours of Madrid and 4 hours of Cancun a passenger suffers a cardiac arrest, in the 1 course the plane does not have a defibrillator, the person dies and the plane arrives at destination with the deceased according to the air regulations, in the case 2 the aircraft has a defibrillator, the patient after one or several downloads is recovered, the plane before this emergency must land at the nearest airport urgently, which supposes an important expense
Even so, recently some companies such as those belonging to Globalia or Pullmantur have incorporated this equipment into their aircraft offering the best service they can give to a passenger at whatever cost they have .. saving their lives in case of cardiac arrest.
Spain will continue to the tail of Europe in Cardioprotection as long as we do not have a national regulation of implantation, use and maintenance of defibrillators as well as extinguishers. The massification of defibrillators as well as extinguishers could mean saving more than 4.000 lives per year in our country.
