Semi-automatic defibrillator in children

The truth about your pediatric patches

Automatic defibrillator for children

Semi-automatic defibrillator in children: The truth about your patches

Heart disease has no age, therefore, the use of defibrillator they may be necessary at all times and at all ages.

For this reason, defibrillators offer a large number of benefits for an entire community, also within defibrillators, there are patches, which can be for children or adults, which will mainly change the size of the patch, being much larger for adults , and for children a smaller patch that adapts to the morphology of the child, in the next article we will be breaking down a little more about the patches in children.

Before continuing we will differentiate 3 groups, with their respective patches:

1 group: Infants (under 1 year) = pediatric patch

2 group: Children (1 to 8 years) =  pediatric patch

3 Group: Children (more than 8 years) = adult patch = a person who weighs more than 25 kg, or children over 8 years old

What child can a pediatric patch be placed on?

The heart is an important organ, which is basically covered by musculature, this musculature is handled based on electrical impulses, therefore, there are situations in which a lack of control of the natural electrical conductivity of the heart can cause great problems, so therefore, it is necessary to use the defibrillator, however, to make use of a defibrillator in children, we must have certain considerations that we will include below.

Placement of the defibrillator patch in infants and children.

The placement of defibrillator for children, may be the same as adults. However, if the electrodes are too large to prevent an electric arc from occurring through the electrodes, a patch may be placed on the back under the left scapula and the other on the front left of the sternum. Do not worry that, like adult patches, pediatric patches they contain placement instructions. The best position of adhesive electrodes in children has not been defined, so both anterior / posterior and sternal / apical placement can be used interchangeably.

Measurement of defibrillator patches in children and infants.

Recommended patch measurements are 4,5 cm in diameter for infants (less than one year old) and children weighing less than 10 kg and 8 to 12 cm for those weighing more than 10 kg (over one year). However, it is not known what the ideal size is but what you do know is that there must be a good separation between the electrodes as we mentioned earlier.

Energy discharge in children and infants.

In children (1 to 8 years), the use of defibrillators with an energy dose attenuator is recommended, to be more sure of the electrical charge that will be sent to the child, however, if it does not exist, a normal charge with a patch can be sent adult (over 8 years old).

In children under 1 year there is no evidence to support or advise against the use of AEDs. The experience of using AED (with dose attenuator) in children under 1 year of age is small.

Keep in mind that most of the defibrillators They come with the adult pads pre-attached to the defibrillator console. However, you can find defibrillators that just by moving a switch that indicates Adult / Pediatric, the console automatically activates the energy attenuators to give 50 - 75 joules (energy for patients from 1 to 8 years old).

What patches of the defibrillator do I use then?

En infants younger than 1 year use with power attenuators is acceptable if no alternative is available (ERC 2015 guide).

En children from 1 to 8 years will be used pediatric patch, if you do not have them, it is acceptable to use an adult patch.

En older children of 8 years an AED with adult patch.

The use of a defibrillator is not only in the hands of health personnel, therefore, to know how to use it, is what can differentiate the life or death of a person.
