Melià Hotels turns its hotels into cardioprotected spaces with defibrillators from the life-saving project
The installation of state-of-the-art defibrillators, their correct location, maintenance and training of several workers from each center have been necessary to obtain the Cardioprotected Space Certificate. With this, Meliá Hotels International reinforces its commitment to its customers and employees, thanks to the incorporation of these equipment that can save lives.
During this month, state-of-the-art defibrillators are being installed in the hotels operated by the Meliá and Tryp brands, while workers from the facilities themselves are trained in the handling of the defibrillator. Thus, Meliá Hotels International is one of the first chains to certify its hotels as Cardioprotected Spaces, something vital to save a life.
Every year in Spain more than 30.000 people die due to cardiac arrest, being the main cause of mortality in our country. The presence of a defibrillator and the basic knowledge in doing a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can increase the survival in more than one 70% if we apply the defibrillator in the first 5 minutes after the emergency.
Today, more than 50% of 5-star hotels have cardioprotection services with trained personnel for their use, this percentage drops to 20% in 3 and 4-star hotels and is greatly diminished in lower-category hotels where there is no establishments with cardioprotection services reach not even 5%.
Rubén Campo, founder of the Salvavidas Project, emphasizes the importance of having this equipment, not only for awareness of sudden death but also for image, companies must have this equipment for both reasons. On the other hand, according to Rubén Campo, there are more and more Autonomous Communities that legislate on the obligation to have defibrillators in places of public or worker influx, something that is expected in the future to become a general norm for all of Spain because a life is worth the same in one Community or another and it is proven that defibrillators save lives.
